"Architecture Studio and Community linkage Programmes"

ART + TECHNOLOGY = ARCHITECTURE

 “Art + Technology = Architecture”, an inspiring series of workshops curated by the Department of Architecture, Bishop Jerome School of Architecture and Design, Kollam. This one-day workshop promises a rare blend of creativity, innovation, and hands-on learning, tailored for young, curious minds eager to explore the future of design, science, and technology.

Workshop Highlights

1. Clay Modelling : “Shape your imagination and let your hands do the talking!”

Participants will immerse themselves in the tactile world of clay, transforming their creativity into stunning sculptures. This hands-on activity combines creativity with the understanding of form, structure, and material properties, guided by experienced mentors.

2. Mega Structure – “Discover the thrill of design and engineering!”

Students will combine artistic design principles with engineering techniques to construct complex toothpick bridges. This activity highlights the balance between creativity, structural stability, and problem-solving, offering insights into real-world applications of science and technology.

3. VR, AI & Architecture – “Room Remix: AI Designer Edition, with Virtual Reality gadgets”

Experience the future of interior design by collaborating with AI tools to re-imagine spaces. Students will learn how to transform their dream designs into digital masterpieces with modern technology and gadgets.

These workshops aim to Cultivate innovation, Foster creativity, and provide students with a glimpse into the future of design and technology. This event is an excellent platform to ignite a passion for architecture, design, and technology among aspiring creative young minds. Participation is free and seats are limited to maintain the quality of the workshops.

PRODUCT DEMONSTRATION
OCTOBER-14, 2024

As part of an Industry interaction with academia, the Department of Architecture and Design organizes a product demonstration of Sympolo Tiles. This session is aimed to bridge the gap between industry practices and academic learning by providing students and faculty with firsthand exposure to the latest trends and materials in architectural design. The demonstration showcased a variety of tile collections, detailing their textures, finishes, and practical applications in both residential and commercial projects. Participants were introduced to technical specifications, installation techniques, and maintenance considerations, fostering a deeper understanding of real-world applications.

Kollam Municipal Corporation has entrusted The Architecture department, Bishop Jerome School of Architecture and Design, with the design and planning of this prestigious project, which is one of the first of its kind in Kerala.

കൊല്ലം നഗരത്തിന്റെ വികസനവും ടൂറിസവും ലക്ഷ്യമാക്കി, കൊല്ലം കോർപ്പറേഷൻ, തങ്കശ്ശേരി കോട്ട കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ച് ഒരു ആകർഷകമായ സാംസ്കാരിക ടൂറിസം കേന്ദ്രം രൂപീകരിക്കാൻ പദ്ധതിയിടുന്നു.

കൊല്ലത്തിന്റെ സമ്പന്നമായ ചരിത്രവും സാംസ്കാരിക പൈതൃകവും ആധുനിക ലൈറ്റ് ആൻഡ് സൗണ്ട് ഷോയിലൂടെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതാണ് ഈ പദ്ധതിയുടെ പ്രധാന ഭാഗം.

ഇതിനു പുറമെ, തങ്കശ്ശേരി കോട്ട പശ്ചാത്തലമാക്കി സാംസ്കാരിക- കലാ പരിപാടികൾ അരങ്ങേറാൻ ഒരു ഓപ്പൺ എയർ തിയേറ്റർ, ഹിസ്റ്റോറിക്കൽ പാർക്ക്‌ മുതലായവ വിഭാവനം ചെയ്യുന്നു.

ഈ പദ്ധതിയുടെ ആസൂത്രണവും പൂർണ രൂപരേഖയും തയ്യാറാക്കാൻ കൊല്ലം ബിഷപ് ജെറോം ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ടിലെ ആർക്കിടെക്ച്ചർ & ഡിസൈൻ വിഭാഗത്തെയാണ് ചുമതല പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. കൊല്ലത്തിന്റെ സാംസ്കാരിക-ടൂറിസം മേഖലയെ പുതിയ തലത്തിലേക്ക് ഉയർത്തുക എന്നതാണ് ഈ പദ്ധതിയിലൂടെ ലക്ഷ്യമിടുന്നത്.

The Department of Architecture and Design at the Bishop Jerome Institute celebrated Indian Architects’ Day on September 1, commemorating the enactment of the Architects Act of 1972. Organized by the students, the event honored the contributions of architects to society and highlighted the importance of maintaining professional standards and ethics in the field. The “Architecture Studio and Community Linkage Program” is an exciting academic initiative launched by the Architecture Department of Bishop Jerome Institute, Kollam. Designed to bridge the gap between academia and the broader community, this program fosters collaborations with various institutions.  

As part of this program, we are excited to host a drawing and painting competition for school children under the theme “INDIA OF MY DREAMS”. This event aims to cultivate creativity and artistic talent in a supportive and inspiring setting, encouraging the artistic growth of young minds.

ENVIRONMENT AND ARCHITECTURE:  Study Tour and Site visit- Aug 10, 2024

The selected students from each batch, along with faculty members, visited Amala Hills-The high altitude land in Amboori, Thiruvananthapuram, to study  the potential of eco-friendly architecture in an environmentally fragile area. They have proposed sustainable design solutions based on their research.

The study was conducted as part of a project undertaken by the Design Consultancy Cell of the Architecture Department.

DOCUMENTATION-July 15, 2024
Semester-5 students are undertaking an extensive documentation project on the Cathedral of Quilon Diocese, one of the oldest churches in the region. Renowned for its architectural grandeur, this cathedral boasts a rich history with origins and significance that span centuries. The students aim to capture its magnificent architectural features, along with the historical events and cultural heritage that define this iconic structure.

WEEKEND TOUR- July 13, 2024

 This weekend, third Semester B.Arch students (S3) will be embarking on Architectural study tour to Padmanabhapuram Palace, Thackala. This excursion will provide an opportunity for the students to explore and learn about the intricate Kerala Architecture and historical significance of the palace.

ONLINE PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST

      The online photography contest is conducted to encourage creativity and artistic expression among the School Children through the medium of photography. We believe that a photography contest will not only showcase the talent and skills of the students but also foster a sense of community and appreciation for visual arts. 

       This Event is organized by the Bishop Jerome School of Architecture, Kollam as part of Architecture studio and Society integration program.

Theme

Local Landmarks: Capturing historical buildings and monuments or objects with historical significance in the community.

Cultural Traditions: Showcasing traditional festivals, ceremonies, and customs.

Traditional Attire: Highlighting traditional clothing and its cultural importance.

Ancestral Homes: Exploring old family homes and their stories.

Participants

The contest is open to higher secondary school students, those currently in 11th or 12th grade, as well as recent 12th-grade pass out students.

 

Submission Guidelines.

 

  1. The photos should be recent and unedited.
  2. Participants must submit the photographs in jpg or jpeg format only.
  3. There is no file size restriction for the photographs.
  4. Each student can submit up to five entries.
  5. Only individual participation (single entity) is accepted.
  6. Theme and Location, Student name, Grade, Phone number, Location of residing house, School etc has to be clearly mentioned in the Email.

Judging Criteria.

Photographs will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Creative understanding and selection
  • Composition
  • Adherence to theme
  • Technical proficiency

Prizes

Prizes include online certificates and other exciting rewards. The selected photos will be exhibited in public platforms.

 

Timeline.

The contest will run from 4th July 2024 to 8th July 2024. Submissions must reach by email before12:00 pm on 8th July 2024 .

Winners will be announced within two days of the submission deadline.

  • The Scholarship is awarded to students aspiring to become Architects and has high aptitude in Architecture. It is provided by the Bishop Jerome Foundation.
  • Selection through Scholarship Examination
  • Date of Examination: 12- July- 2024, time: 10.00 AM, Examination Center: Bishop Jerome Institute, Fatima College Road, Kollam.
  • No Registration Fees for the Exam.
  • Exam Duration 2 hrs
  • Examination Pattern: Multiple Choice Questions and Drawing.
  • Syllabus: Same as NATA
  • The Drawing sheet will be provided at the examination Hall, candidate should bring Pencil and other drawing items.
  • Candidate must bring a Photo Identity card, such as School ID Card, Aadhar card etc.
  • After the valuation the Result will be available at Bishop Jerome Institute, and will be final and undisputable.

EXPERT TALK: JUNE 14,2024

Speaker of the Day: Prof. Dr. N. Jothilakshmy, Principal of Saveetha College of Architecture and Design

Prof. Dr. N. Jothilakshmy is an ambitious researcher in the field of urban design, dedicated to fostering a research-oriented mindset among young architects. She holds a Master’s degree in Town and Country Planning and a Ph.D. from SAP, Anna University, Chennai, where she focused on “Evaluation of Form-Based Codes and the Image of Chennai, Tamil Nadu.”

Dr. Jothilakshmy has presented and published over 50 papers at various national and international conferences, journals, and book chapters, including ten Scopus-indexed publications. With more than 30 years of experience in teaching, academics, research, and practice, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the field of architecture.

OPEN HOUSE DEFENCE- THESIS BATCH 2024

 

Open house defense of B.Arch thesis students is scheduled on 13-June-2024 .In this event the students present their thesis work to a broader audience, which may include faculty all departments, students, peers, and the public.

 As part of improving excellence in architecture education through practical exposure, we are excited to start the Design Consultancy Cell in Architecture Department.

The Aim of this initiative is to create a connection between society and our institution through Architecture consultancy service.

The Objectives of this initiative are:

  1. Prepare architecture design for individuals, agencies, and institutions. 

  2. Popularize new trends and innovations in architecture to the public through the above designs.

  3. Propagate green technology in architecture.

  4. Develop cost-effective design technologies

  5. Encourage students to gain knowledge and professional exposure by working along with the faculty team.

All activities, including client meetings, design development, and project submissions, will be managed by the team of faculties of our department. The cell works asper the directives of Council of Architecture, India

The Department of Architecture, Bishop Jerome Institute, Kollam,  announces the launch of the Career Guidance and Placement Cell (CGPC).  The CGPC aims to assist students with career placements through campus recruitment and also support students who are intended in pursuing higher education.

Further information, such as the companies involved in campus recruitment, interview dates, and more, will be communicated by the faculty in charge of the CGPC through the portal.
